The National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia adopted on 13 July 2021 the Resolution on Long-Term Climate Strategy until 2050. A clear goal of Slovenia’s climate strategy is to transition to net-zero emissions and become climate neutral by 2050.
The climate goal challenges and empowers sectors, such as transport, energy, industry, agriculture, building (household fuel use, service sector), waste and land use, land use, land-use change, and forestry, and their sectoral policies to achieve an overall net-zero emissions goal by 2050. It also sets strategic sectoral goals for 2050 (and 2040), which must be taken into account consistently across every sector and integrated into their sectoral documents and plans.
The vision of this strategy is to make Slovenia a climate-neutral and climate-resilient society based on sustainable development by 2050. It will manage energy and natural resources efficiently, while maintaining a high level of economic competitiveness. Society will be based on preserved nature, circular economy, renewable and low-carbon energy sources, sustainable mobility, and locally produced healthy food.
Slovenia should become a society adapted and resilient to climate change impacts and characterised by a high quality of life and a high degree of safety of life, taking advantage of the changed climate situation. The transition to a climate-neutral society will be inclusive, respecting the principles of climate justice. The costs and benefits of the transition will be divided justly, as the implementation of mitigation and adaptation measures will also cover the most vulnerable groups.
The Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning drafted the document based on the commitments from the Paris Agreement, the “Slovenia and the Healthy Planet” Framework on Long-Term Climate Policy and the Regulation on the Governance of the Energy Union and Climate Action (2018/1999).
